Planning to use your mobile phone while traveling? Whether you want to stay connected with loved ones or access maps and apps on the go, it’s important to set up your phone for international use before departure. Without a plan or SIM card, roaming fees can add up quickly.
International phone plans
Before you leave, check in with your cell phone provider to learn about their international coverage options. Ask about:
- Roaming charges
- Data usage limits
- Coverage by country
Understanding how your plan works abroad can help you avoid unexpected fees and ensure your phone works where and when you need it.
We recommend visiting your carrier’s website or contacting them directly to explore international plan options.
Local SIM cards
Purchasing a local SIM card is often the most affordable way to use your phone abroad. You’ll typically find official phone company kiosks at international airports, either before or after baggage claim. These kiosks are reliable and convenient, especially since it can be tricky to find time to shop for a SIM card once your tour begins.
Tips for using a local SIM card:
- Your phone must be unlocked to use a SIM card from another carrier. Contact your provider before departure to confirm.
- You’ll need to show your passport when purchasing a SIM card.
- If your tour visits multiple countries, ask if the SIM card works across borders (most do in Europe).
- Have the salesperson install and test the SIM card before leaving the airport.
- Write down your new local number so friends and family can reach you.
- Keep your original SIM card in a safe place—you’ll need it to restore your U.S. or Canadian number after your tour.
Using free Wi-Fi
Want to avoid international fees altogether? You can use your phone with Wi-Fi only. Most hotels offer free Wi-Fi (sometimes limited to common areas), and you’ll receive the password at check-in.
To avoid accidental roaming charges:
- Turn on airplane mode before your international flight
- Keep airplane mode on throughout your trip
- Manually connect to Wi-Fi when it’s available
This option is free and works well for travelers who don’t need constant connectivity while out exploring, but do note that your messaging apps (including the Go Ahead app) and map services will not work when you’re away from Wi-Fi.
Stay connected with the Go Ahead app
Whether you’re using an international plan or just Wi-Fi, the Go Ahead Tours mobile app (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers) is a great way to stay in the loop. You can:
- Chat with or call your Tour Director
- Connect with or call fellow travelers
- Access your itinerary and travel documents
Next steps:
- Contact your phone provider to review international plan options.
- Decide whether to use a plan, Wi-Fi, or a local SIM card.
