Starting January 8, 2025, United States and Canadian passport holders will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). This applies to travelers visiting the UK, as well as those transiting through the UK during a layover, even if they’re not leaving the airport.
This online travel authorization is designed to enhance border security and will be electronically linked to your passport. Please note that airlines may refuse boarding if you don’t have an ETA.
Who needs to apply for the UK ETA?
Any United States or Canadian passport holder who is:
- Visiting the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) during their Go Ahead tour or independent travel plans.
- Transiting through the UK during a layover (e.g., at London Heathrow), even if they're not leaving the airport or passing through UK border control.
How to apply for the UK ETA
Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their UK ETA before departure.
- The ETA application must be completed online via the official UK ETA app or the UK government website.
- You'll need to provide personal details, including a photo of your passport and a photo of yourself. Flight and hotel information are not required.
- For detailed, step-by-step instructions on completing the web application, refer to our United Kingdom ETA walkthrough guide.
Approval and confirmation
- Once your application is approved, you'll receive a confirmation email. Please keep this email for reference in case you need to refer to it later.
- Your UK ETA will be electronically linked to your passport.
Cost information
- The application fee for the UK ETA is £10 (approximately $13 USD or $18 CAD).
- You will pay this fee using a credit or debit card upon completing your application.
Processing time and when to apply
- Processing typically takes three business days, provided there are no issues.
- We recommend applying at least 30 days before departure to allow enough time for processing.
Validity
- The UK ETA will be valid for 2 years, allowing multiple entries during this period, provided the traveler’s passport remains valid. If you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
- For tourism purposes, travelers can stay in the UK for up to 6 months during each visit.
For more information about these requirements, please visit the UK’s official government website.
