Worried about a short layover or tight airport connection? Whether you’re concerned about switching gates, making your next flight, or your checked bags catching up with you, this guide is here to help you prepare.
A short connection - typically being under 45 minutes - can be made, but it requires planning and awareness. You’ll need to move quickly, stay alert for gate changes, and understand baggage handling rules for your specific itinerary.
Here’s what to know to keep things stress-free.
What to Expect
Time is tight
Short connections leave little room for delays. Be ready to move quickly between gates, especially if your connecting flight is in another terminal or concourse, or if you need to go through security again.
Know your gate location
Use your airline’s app or airport monitors to check gate details as soon as you land. Airports vary in layout, and some may require a shuttle or a long walk between gates.
Track your flight status
Keep an eye on your flight using the airline’s app or website. If your first flight is delayed, alert staff immediately, as they may be able to assist with rebooking or hold your next flight briefly.
Understand the risk
If your incoming flight is late, you may miss your connection. Airlines will often work with you to reschedule, but acting fast and communicating with the airline is key.
Baggage may or may not transfer
Check with an agent at the airport before you depart on your first flight to see if your bags will be sent to your final destination, or if you'll need to collect and re-check it at any point along your journey.
- If both flights are on the same airline or alliance, and you do not need to clear immigration and customs during your connection, your checked bags are usually transferred automatically.
- If your connection is in another country than the one you departed from, you’ll need to collect your bags, clear customs, and re-check them before your next flight.
- With very short international connections, there’s a chance your bag might not make it to the next plane in time.
Pack light and efficiently
Use only a carry-on when possible. If you must check a bag, pack essentials like medications, documents, and a change of clothes in your carry-on just in case.
Be ready to move
Once you land, be prepared to move quickly. Skip any unnecessary stops and head straight to your gate. Airport staff can often assist if you're tight on time.
Pack snacks and water
You might not have time to buy anything between flights. Bring snacks and carry an empty refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.
With these preparations, a short connection can become a manageable part of your trip. If you experience any delays or missed connections, please follow these steps:
- Work with the airline as soon as you land to rebook your next flight.
