While your tour includes many exciting highlights, it’s important to plan for the out-of-pocket expenses you’ll encounter along the way. From meals and souvenirs to tipping and unexpected costs, budgeting ahead of time can help you feel more relaxed and prepared throughout your journey.
Meals and beverages
Breakfast is always included on tour, and some lunches and dinners are, too. To plan ahead:
- Review your day-by-day itinerary to see which meals are included
- Budget for meals on days when lunch or dinner is not provided
- Keep in mind that meal prices vary by destination - Switzerland, for example, is more expensive than Thailand
Most included dinners come with one glass of beer or wine, or your choice of soft drink, unless restricted by local laws. Any additional drinks will be at your own expense. Learn more about meals on tour.
Excursions and free time activities
If you add an excursion while on tour, it must be paid for through the Go Ahead mobile app (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers) before the activity begins. You should also budget for:
- Entrance fees to museums or attractions during free time
- Transportation like taxis, buses, or rideshares for independent exploring
Souvenirs
Souvenir prices can vary widely, from a small magnet to a handcrafted leather bag. To budget wisely:
- Research popular souvenirs from your destinations
- Estimate typical prices online before your trip
- Consider your luggage space and airline weight limits to avoid extra baggage fees
Tipping
Tipping is customary and appreciated. Here are our general recommendations:
- Tour Director: The equivalent of $10–$12 USD per person, per day, in local currency
- Bus driver(s): The equivalent of $4 USD per person, per day, in local currency
- Local guides: The equivalent of $2 USD per person, per tour, in local currency (if applicable)
You’ll find any additional tipping guidelines in the “Getting ready” section of your online account (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers) or mobile app (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers).
Unexpected expenses
It’s always a good idea to have a little extra set aside for the unexpected, like needing medical attention while abroad. In most cases, you’ll pay out of pocket – you have travel insurance, you can submit a claim once you return home.
