Not sure when or how to check in for your flights? You’re not alone. This guide walks you through when to check in, how to access your reservation, and what to do if something doesn’t go quite as planned.
When and how to check in
You’ll need to check yourself in for all flights on your itinerary. Most airlines open check-in 24 hours before your first scheduled flight, and the easiest way to do it is through the airline’s official website or mobile app.
Important: Only check in through the airline’s official site or app. Avoid third-party websites that might look like the real thing.
If you’re flying with more than one airline, be sure to check in with the airline operating your first flight.
Online check-in instructions
- Go to the airline’s website or open their mobile app
- Navigate to the “Check-in” section
- Enter your name and 6-character reservation number (this might be called a confirmation number, booking code, or record locator depending on your airline)
- Your reservation number can be found in the Flights section of your Go Ahead online account (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers) or mobile app (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers)
- Follow the prompts to complete check-in and receive your mobile boarding pass
Trouble accessing your reservation?
If your booking can’t be found:
- Double-check that your name matches exactly what’s on your passport
- If your middle name is included on your travel document, try entering your first and middle name together (no space) in the first name field (for example, RobertHenry)
- This is a common formatting issue and may also show up on your boarding pass
Using a mobile boarding pass
- Not checking a bag? You can head straight to security with your mobile boarding pass
- Checking a bag? Stop by the airline’s ticket counter first to drop off your luggage before going through security
Can’t check in online?
Some reservations require in-person check-in - this is normal! Head to the airport a few minutes early to check-in in person.
If online check-in isn’t available:
- Go to the ticket counter of the airline operating your first flight
- Bring your passport and any required travel documents
- The airline agent will check you in, collect your luggage, and print your boarding passes
- Some airports also offer self-check-in kiosks to speed up the process
Next steps:
- Check in 24 hours before your flight using the airline’s official mobile app or website.
- Use your reservation number from your Go Ahead account (U.S. travelers/Canadian travelers).
- If needed, check in at the airport with your passport.
- Ask airline staff for help if you have questions at the airport.
