If your checked bag doesn’t show up at baggage claim, take a deep breath: we know it’s frustrating, but you’re not alone, and there are steps you can take to get it back. Here’s what to do if your luggage is delayed or lost while you’re on tour.
First things first: talk to the airline
The best place to start is with the airline. Head to their desk at the airport and let them know your bag didn’t arrive. They’ll walk you through what they need, which usually includes:
- Your baggage claim tag (you got this when you checked in)
- Your contact info
- The names and dates of the hotels you’ll be staying at
If there’s no one at the desk, you can call the airline or visit their website to report your missing bag.
Ask about reimbursement
Some airlines offer reimbursement for things like:
- The cost of checking your bag
- Essentials you need to buy while you wait (like clothes or toiletries)
It’s a good idea to ask what’s covered and keep your receipts just in case. If you have a Go Ahead Travel Protection plan, you may also be eligible to file for reimbursement.
If you packed any medications or medical equipment in your checked bag, be sure to inform the airline of this. We recommend packing medications and valuables in your carry-on.
Track your bag
Once you’ve filed a report, the airline should give you a claim number. You can use this to:
- Check your bag’s status on the airline’s website
- Update your temporary address if you’re moving between hotels
Your bag will be delivered to wherever you’re staying, so make sure the airline has your current location.
