Traveling by train on a Go Ahead tour is a comfortable and efficient way to move between destinations, but it’s a little bit different from independent train travel. Here’s what to know so you feel prepared and confident.
Luggage
- You’ll manage your own luggage - porterage is not available
- Be ready to lift your suitcase onto storage racks quickly
- Pack light: Limit baggage to one checked bag and one personal item per traveler
- We recommended small or medium rolling suitcase + a backpack or handbag
Boarding & exiting
- Trains stop briefly - boarding and exiting must be quick
- You’ll need to:
- Step up onto the train (often over a raised platform)
- Store your luggage before finding your seat
- Repeat the process when exiting
Navigating the station
- Expect to walk through busy stations with your luggage
- Some stations have airport-style security, including scanners and/or bag checks
- Platforms are often announced last-minute - stay close to your Tour Director
- Be prepared for:
- Escalators or stairs (elevators are not guaranteed)
- Carrying your luggage over steps
Seating & train environment
- Seats are usually pre-assigned, but groups may be split across cars
- Trains are public transportation, so expect local commuters
- While these transfers are not on luxury trains, many routes offer scenic views
Special notes by destination
On some tours, your larger luggage will be transferred between hotels separately. You’ll want to bring an overnight bag or backpack for the nights you’ll be without your large luggage. Review your tour itinerary for details.
Japan tours
- Large suitcases are not allowed on bullet trains - Go Ahead provides luggage transfer service between hotels
- Bring a small overnight bag for essentials - your suitcase will arrive at your next hotel
Machu Picchu tours
- Bring a small overnight bag for your one-night stay in the Machu Picchu Region
- Your main suitcase will be transferred between hotels
Next steps:
- Pack light and bring a manageable bag.
- Stay close to your Tour Director during train transfers.
- Prepare an overnight bag if traveling in Japan or to Machu Picchu.
