Traveling somewhere sunny and warm? High temperatures can call for a little extra planning to stay safe and comfortable. Whether you're exploring ancient ruins or strolling through a sun-soaked city, these tips will help you beat the heat and enjoy every moment.
Smart ways to stay cool
Hydration is key
Hot weather can sneak up on you, so it’s important to drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Bring a reusable water bottle and try filling it with ice at breakfast to keep it cool throughout the day.
Some travelers like to bring hydration supplements or salts with them to use throughout their trip.
Dress for the weather
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in light colors to reflect the sun and keep your body temperature down. Fabrics like cotton and linen are great choices for warm destinations.
Protect yourself from the sun
Don’t forget your sun protection essentials:
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Sunglasses
- High-SPF sunscreen (and reapply throughout the day, especially after swimming)
Bring cooling accessories
A few small items can make a big difference:
- Portable fan (rechargeable fans are great for travel)
- Cooling towel
- Handheld misting device
These are especially helpful during long walking tours or outdoor excursions.
Be air conditioning aware
Many countries outside of the U.S. and Canada have different standards when it comes to air conditioning. In some destinations, air conditioning in the hotels may not be available or may not be as strong as you are used to.
Local laws and regulations can limit air conditioning to certain seasons, and may not go below a certain set temperature.
Plan around peak heat
If you have free time, try to schedule outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon when it’s cooler. Your Tour Director will also take high temperatures into account when planning group activities.
Stay weather-savvy
Check the local forecast each day so you know what to expect and can dress and plan accordingly. Knowing the temperature highs helps you stay one step ahead of the heat.
Next steps:
- Pack a reusable water bottle and cooling accessories.
- Choose breathable, light-colored clothing.
- Bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen).
- Check the weather daily and plan accordingly.
