This article includes important information to help you anticipate what to expect during ferry transfers on a Go Ahead tour, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience.
Boarding and exiting
Buses are typically unable to park right near the boarding area, so travelers should be prepared to walk from the parking area to the ferry, sometimes over uneven terrain or uphill, while managing their own luggage (if transferring to a new overnight location). The same can be expected when getting off the ferry. Travelers must also be comfortable standing in line while waiting to board or disembark, similar to airplane travel.
Most ferries have stairs or steep ramps that must be used to board and exit. All travelers must be able to navigate these quickly and efficiently without assistance, unless they are specifically traveling with a companion who will provide dedicated assistance.
Please keep in mind that ferries are public transportation, so locals, other tourists, and your tour group will all be boarding and disembarking at the same time. Boarding can be fast and chaotic depending on the location and day.
Luggage
Porterage is never guaranteed for ferry transfers, and all travelers are responsible for managing their own luggage if taking a ferry to transfer between overnight locations. Please remember to keep personal items with you, as larger luggage is typically held in a general storage area for all passengers and cannot be accessed during the ferry ride.
Weather
Weather conditions can be unpredictable and vary greatly, especially when traveling by sea. We strongly recommend bringing motion sickness medication, as rough waters are common. Packing a raincoat or windbreaker jacket and sturdy shoes for ferry transfer days is also advised.
Amenities
Seating, food and drinks, as well as public bathrooms are not guaranteed in the waiting area for embarkation or disembarkation. Once on board, ferries will have restrooms, and most will have a small cafe where you can grab a snack and beverage. Wi-Fi is not guaranteed while on board but may be available for purchase in some regions.
Seating
Seating policies vary depending on the ferry. You may have assigned seating or open seating. Your Tour Director will explain these arrangements with your group once on tour, and they'll safely hold your ferry tickets until it's time to board.
